About this event

The Advintage crew is very excited to present a focused tasting of Martine’s Wines, Valkyrie Selections and Failla. This is a rare opportunity to learn about these storied producers and purchase wines at a discount for Fall arrival.

*Martine’s Wines*

Founded by Martine Saunier in 1979, Martine’s Imports was the first import company in the United States established by a woman, and what a splash she made. Martine introduced the U.S. to such iconic producers as Chateau Rayas and Henri Jayer. Over the next 30 years, Martine built her reputation and portfolio by adding one lauded producer after another from every corner of France. Her passion rests squarely in Burgundy, which provides the cornerstone of the portfolio. Carefully selected for inimitable quality and sense of place, benchmark producers from Champagne, Rhone, Loire, Bordeaux, Cahors, Jura and Jurancon round out the book. The rare departure from France was the addition of the world famous Niepoort from Duoro in Portugal.

Although still involved in the business, Martine spends most of the year as a moviemaker documenting the lifecycle of the grape. A Year in Burgundy was her first theatrical release to much acclaim. Similar documentaries about Champagne and Portugal are in the works. All this at a spry 88 years old!

Heading up day to day operations are relatively new partners, Gregory Castells and Kate Laughlin. Castells, who was born in Provence, worked in hotels and restaurants in France, England and the U.S., including Le Bec Fin in Philadelphia, Le Bastide in Los Angeles and as the Head Sommelier at the French Laundry before joining Napa-based retailer Soutirage. "I've known Gregory for a long time. He was a good client," said Saunier. "We met recently and he was thinking of starting an Internet wine company, so I said, 'You should run my company. You know my wines inside out.'"

Castells has been in France solidifying relationships with key Martine’s
producers as well as cultivating new partnerships for the future.

Bringing a fresh, modern approach to wines rooted in tradition, Valkyrie Selections is the new wave of wine importer. With combined experience in restaurant, retail, wholesale and import businesses, Valkyrie is uniquely suited to service the distinct needs within each tier of the industry, and be the finest stewards for a stable of incredible producers. Valkyrie represents family-owned vineyards that produce - above all else - wines with soul and authenticity. They bring to the American market wines that we serve at our own tables - seeking balance, freshness, and usually a healthy dose of acid.

*Failla *

Enough cannot be said about his dynamic winemaking abilities or the influence Ehren Jordan has had on the evolution of California wine production. Gaining experience from every facet of the trade as well as working the vineyards and cellars of Jean-Luc Colombo in Cornas, Neyers and Marcassin, Ehren made a name for himself as the General Manager, Wine Maker and Viticulturist at Turley Wine Cellars. To add to this hat trick, Ehren and his wife, Anne-Marie also started their own project Failla in 1998. Good thing Ehren is also a licensed pilot which helped him move vineyard to vineyard quickly. In 2013, Ehren gracefully stepped down from his role at Turley to focus solely on Failla. We at Advintage are very grateful and fortunate to represent Ehren, Anne-Marie and the beautiful, balanced and highly prized wines they create.
