The Lane Vineyard grows along picturesque Ravenswood Lane, 3 kilometres East of Hahndorf, overlooking the Onkaparinga Valley in the heart of the Adelaide Hills. Vigneron John Edwards planted the first vines on the domain in 1993.
At 450m above sea level, this vineyard is a patchwork of microclimates set within rolling hills and vales. Ancient gravelly soils on many aspects provide a very special place to grow vines. Vigneron John and his wife Helen are the founders of The Lane Vineyard and have now passed the management onto the next
generation, their sons Marty and Ben.
There are 6 noble varieties planted on the domain with vine age of 12 to 23 years: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Semillon. All plantings reflect careful consideration of aspect, soil type, variety and clone. The soils in this vineyard are ancient; research estimates them to be 1800 million years old. The soil is mostly gravel with limestone/calcium silicates and ferrous pebbles spread throughout. The climatic conditions, soils and organic vineyard practices of The Lane provide unique conditions for growing wine grapes of greatness and distinction.
