Although making wine in Chile since 1992, it was not until 2000 that the perfect «cool » location at Lolol in the Colchagua Valley was found by François and his brother Jacques for their own domain. They purchased 200 hectares of land here (bringing together seven different landowners in the same family), in an area that at the time had not been used for vine growing.Today the estate has 28 hectares of vines and Lolol has become a sought-afterarea of wine production. Being on the « Ruta del Vino» and in such a stunning location, wine tourism is being developed on the estate to cater for the growing numbers of wine enthusiasts to the Colchagua Valley.Lolol (Mapudungun: «land of crabs and holes») is a Chilean commune and town in Colchagua Province, O’Higgins Region. Lolol was founded in 1830.The choice of the Lolol Valley proved to be judicious, thanks to the weather conditions and the granite schist terroir. The resulting wines have a unique personality. The property lies in an east-west valley that receives cold air from the Pacific Ocean. The temperature difference between the sea and the land causes a white mist, the \"Humo Blanco\", which is visible every morning just above our vines. It marks the border of our vineyard.\r\n\r\nToday François Lurton continues to explore different possibilities, notably by planting grape varieties that need cooler climates, such as Sauvignon or Pinot Noir, in higher altitude areas. In 2012, wines issued from Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Syrah obtained their organic certification. In 2013, Hacienda Araucano is set to obtain the official « biodynamic » certificate (Demeter). Continuing in this approach of making wines that are as natural as possible, we made our first sulphur-free wine in 2012, a Humo Blanco Carménère.\r\n\r\nMaintaining a policy of decreasing energy consumption and securing our irrigation capacity, we have invested in a reservoir with a volume of 45,000 m3. This water storage facility will enable us to collect some of the abundant rain that is concentrated in the winter period from the drainage basin of our property. The volume of this reservoir covers 30% of the annual requirements of the 30 Ha of vines. This investment will give us a degree of security in the face of climate changes and possible variations in the groundwater supply, with a view to preserving the quality of the wines at the «Clos de Lolol». Jacques and François fell in love with the variety. It was not long before the innovative pair were using their expertise to revolutionise the style of wines in the appellation. Looking for an estate on which to produce great red wines, they naturally turned to the D.O. Toro appellation. François Lurton travelled around the area and discovered some exceptional old parcels of Tinta de Toro, such as \"Cuesta Grande\".\r\nFrançois Lurton and his brother Jacques discovered Rueda through Sauvignon Blanc, in the early 1990s.\r\nThey soon detected the potential of another grape variety, similarly dry and aromatic: Verdejo. Using their expertise, the brothers who gave their name to this estate endeavoured to reveal all the variety's potential: the subtlety of its aromas, its roundness and finish, and its complexity when fermented and aged in oak barrels.\r\nThe Hermans Lurton winery was born, funded fist in Rueda in 1992.\r\nSince the beginning François Lurton pursued his quest for the genuine Verdejo, using organic growing methods, mainly without irrigation, and the use of indigenous yeasts to ferment the must. Then came Toro in 1998. François was not mistaken to think of this little appellation as a kind of new 'secret garden', when he visited it for the first time in 1997 «It is one of the oldest appellations in Spain, and its grape variety, Tinta de Toro, is quite unique,» he explains. Its pre-phylloxera vineyards planted prior to the arrival of the phylloxera blight in 1892, poor, sandy loam soils and continental climate, with strong temperature variations between day and night, are the key features of this great terroir for red wine.\r\n\r\nOUR VINEYARDS –D.O. TORO 100% Tinta de Toro. Plots are scattered in different areas of the D.O. each with their own characteristics. All are grown organically. Altitude in between 620 to 750 meters. We have traditional bush vines goblet; their density varies according to the parcels between 900 and 1100 vines per hectare. The vines are not irrigated. Their average age is 40 years. Produces less kilos of concentrated grapes and late maturity. We also have trained vineyards, planted in high density (\u003e6000 vines/hectares) with irrigation, younger vineyards producing lighter style, earlier matured grapes, with less sugar. \r\n\r\nOUR VINEYARDS –D.O. RUEDA Situated on the northern part of the D.O. around villages of: Castroñuno, La Seca, Matapozuelos.Soils are influenced by the Duero River, its used to be its Bassin: poor, alluvial soil, well drained and with subterranean water thanks to the proximity of the river, qualitative and adapted to vineyards. Our altitude is between 400 to 600 meters. The vineyards are trained, part of it is irrigated and some others are not. Overlooked by Château de Quéribus, in the heart of the Cathar country, Mas Janeil is a unique vineyard whose soil excludes most crops\r\nother than grapes. The vines draw their nourishment from deep down in the soil.\r\nClimate\r\nThe climate is Mediterranean, with warm summers and mild winters. Rainfall is rare and most often occurs in winter, which exposes the vines to water stress in the hot, arid summer months. The vines are constantly buffeted by the Tramontane, a cold, dry wind from the North-West or the Marin, a warm, damp sea breeze from the Mediterranean.\r\n\r\nVineyards\r\nVine density is low, approximately 3,600 vines per hectare. The vineyard consists of sixty-year-old Grenache vines (60%), as well as Syrah (30%) and Mourvèdre. To withstand harsh weather conditions, the vines are spur pruned, giving them a sturdy bushiness in order to cope with the vagaries of the weather. They are planted on the very sunny southern side of the garrigue-covered slopes. Yields are low, about 25 hl/ha. The vineyard plots are laid out in squares (1m x 1m) as in the past - prior to mechanization - so that horses and ploughs can pass through both directions.\r\n\r\nSoil\r\nThe outstanding terroir is made up of stones resulting from the slow erosion of the Corbières\r\nMassif. Thanks to the different varieties of schist, sand, and limestone, the grapes ripen perfectly.","logo_url":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/media.sevenfifty.com/producers_supplier_company_profiles/logos/medium/5582/HAUTS_DE_JANEIL_%282%29.png?1752849696","profile_url":"/b/hautsdejaneil"},{"name":"Mas Janeil by François Lurton","description":"The Valley of Agly in the Roussillon is today accepted as a top quality \"terroir\". Many foreign investors have purchased properties here recently, including winemakers from the new world of the Napa Valley in California and South Africa. It was in 1996 that François came across Mas Janeil at Maury in the Pyrenées-Orientales, spotted the potential and started making authentic wines. It was not until 2009, with the retirement of the owner, that he was able to purchase the property. The property now extends over 70 hectares with 34 hectares planted with vines. It is located in the commune of Tautavel which lies in the Pyrenées-Orientales, northwest of Perpignan. This is Cathar country and the historic Chateau de Queribus overlooks\r\nthe estate. The Mas Janeil vineyard is an unusual place, with no agricultural capacity, where the vine has to send its roots deep into the earth to find nourishment.\r\n\r\n\r\nMas Janeil landed on François’ and Jacques’ radar in 1996 when they became enamored with the Vallée de l’Agly (an area within the Pyrénées Orientales in the southern portion of the Langeudoc-Roussillon) and its breathtaking landscape, prompting them to rent the estate. The old Grenache vines on the property showed vast potential immediately, conveying the different characteristics of the terroir. In 2008 François officially purchased Mas Janeil, constructed a new wine storehouse and partially revamped an old irrigation system. Mas Janeil is 59 acres and situated in the commune of Maury in the Roussilon region at the base of a cliff which harbors Château de Quéribus (Cathar Castle). The estate overlaps a geological fault which allows for an array of different soil types including, schist, granite, limestone and shale. This region experiences a Mediterranean climate consisting of mild winters and hot, dry summers which is well suited to viticulture. In an effort to combat the effects of climate change and respect nature, a drip irrigation system was installed on 15 acres of the estate in 2014 utilizing gravity, as the original system is on the upper part of the estate. The plan is to continue to equip their remaining vineyards in the coming years. \r\n\r\nMas Janeil is committed to sustainable agriculture and does not use pesticides, weed killers or any synthetic chemicals in any of the vineyards. Consequently, an eco-responsible logo can be found on the back of the bottles which depicts their internal chart of not impacting the environment. Additionally the winery has been testing techniques and is working towards a future of sulphur-free wines. The vineyards of Mas Janeil are certified organic from the vintage 2021.\r\n\r\nLes Hauts de Janeil selections are made with the same philosophy in mind as the estate Mas Janeil wines but are meant for earlier consumption and crafted with grapes from both the Mas Janeil and neighboring vineyards which are closer to the coast.","logo_url":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/media.sevenfifty.com/producers_supplier_company_profiles/logos/medium/5087/logo_Mas_Janeil.png?1651191365","profile_url":"/b/masjaneil"},{"name":"Sorgin","description":"Sorgin, the first spirits of Sabine \u0026 Francois Lurton, wine maker and estates owner in France and abroad.
