These vines, some near 90 years old today, are planted on their original, un-grafted rootstocks at 1,300 to 2,300 feet and produce yields less than 1 kilo per plant. The winery was founded in 2001 and is located just down the road from the Gil Family's first winery, Bodegas Juan Gil, in the Valle de la Aragona in Jumilla, Spain. The continental climate of the region is dry, with just 10 - 12 inches of rainfall each year. Rocky and sandy limestone soils provide excellent drainage and allow the vineyards to be dry farmed. Extreme diurnal temperature changes, especially in the growing season, ensure even paced ripening of concentrated berries with complex aromas and flavors. The vineyards are farmed without the use of any pesticides or herbicides.\r\n\r\nThe family invited Chris Ringland to be the principal winemaker on this project. Chris not only is a renowned winemaker, but also works with Monastrell planted in his native Australia. He wanted to produce long-lived wines balancing the bold sweet fruit of the Monastrell grape with Cabernet Sauvignon. El Nido was conceived with a higher percentage of Cabernet, whereas Clio was designed with a higher percentage of Monastrell. \r\n\r\nBoth wines start with careful hand-harvest of whole bunches, which are transported to the winery in small baskets. Before the grapes are pressed, a secondary selection takes place, keeping each parcel and varietal separate. Fermented in small stainless-steel open-top tanks, the wine is then transferred to new French and American oak barrels for a 2-year aging period. Selection of the very best barrels, cured for 5 years and with a medium toast, is essential to quality and complexity of the final wine. \r\n\r\nEach barrel is tasted repeatedly through the aging period and any that do not meet the highest quality standards are eliminated. The final limited production blend is made with the very best wine of the vintage. \r\n\r\nThis wine has garnered international acclaim and a loyal following because of the care taken from vine to bottle. The majority of our vineyards average in age between 40 and 100 years with very low yields (approx. 2,200 lb./ac). The continental climate is extreme here: summers are dry and hot with intense sun and winter is long and cold. The vineyards are between 2,000 and 2,800 feet above sea level, planted on sandy and rocky limestone soils that are very poor in nutrients, but have a great capacity to hold what little rain does fall. The vineyards acquired had been owned by families for generations and was planted with Garnacha vines up to 87 years old. The Gil Family has made it their mission to care for them as if their own ancestors had been the ones to plant them, going as far as to name the vineyards after their previous owners. A reminder of the sense of responsibility to the land and the community that defines the Gil Family projects.\r\n\r\nOur 247-acre estate vineyards are planted with head-pruned bush vines of old-vine Garnacha, ranging from 45 to 85 years old. Known as “The Empire of Garnacha”, Campo de Borja is characterized by dense vineyards at an altitude of 1,500 to 3,000 feet above sea level. The soils are stony and ferrous clay, offering excellent drainage to deep clay layers, and the vineyards are located on the gentle slope coming down from the Moncayo Mountain, with good exposure to the sun, offering wines that are very complex, intense, and well-structured. Day to night temperature difference is extreme and rainfall is limited (13 in. to 17 in. at higher altitude). Very strong, dry winds whip through the region in the winter months, accelerating evaporation.\r\n\r\nThe grapes are hand-harvested in small baskets, and the free run juice and first press from each parcel are fermented separately in stainless-steel, open-top tanks before being transferred to French oak barrels for aging.\r\n\r\nThrough the aging period, which lasts between 6 and 22 months depending on the wine, the barrels are tasted repeatedly in order to decide which will make up each finished wine. The region has a long tradition of winemaking and is considered the birthplace of the Albariño varietal. The winery is surrounded by its estate Albariño vineyards, which are all trained on “parrals” about 5 feet off the ground to ensure plenty of ventilation to counter the damp climate. Harvesting is done by hand in 15kg (33lb) baskets.\r\n\r\nVal do Salnés is the coolest and dampest area of the appellation, with the most Atlantic coastline. Known as “Green Spain”, the region has moderate year-round temperatures, ocean mists and up to 6x the average rainfall of the rest of the country. Named after the 4th generation’s mother, the winery is a testament to the role she played in the continuity of the family business. The Gil Family purchased 47 acres of small plots of Tempranillo, aged between 15 and 60 years, in Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta, at altitudes between 1,300 and 2,600 feet. The winery is located in the town of Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. \r\n\r\nLocated in the northernmost sub-region of the Rioja appellation, the area of Laguardia has a continental climate but receives some maritime influences from the Bay of Biscay to the North. Mountains to the north and south protect the region from the extremes of both climates, providing a microclimate in which the Tempranillo grape thrives. Soils are mainly calcareous clay at elevations between 980 and 2,800 feet with rainfall between 16-21 inches per year.\r\n\r\nOur estate vines are all dry-farmed and hand-harvested, and no pesticides or herbicides are used. Each parcel is fermented separately in small stainless-steel tanks and aged in French oak barrels. The wines are vegan certified.\r\n","logo_url":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/media.sevenfifty.com/producers_supplier_company_profiles/logos/medium/3623/ROSARIO_VERA.png?1615244290","profile_url":"/b/rosario-vera"}]}],"default_images":null,"products":null},{"type":"footer","social_media":{"website":"http://www.gilfamily.es","linkedin_url":null}}],"portfolio_path":"/search?all_vendors=true\u0026searched_from=marketplace-storefronts\u0026supplier_company_profile=438","possible_buyer_relationship":false,"account_already_confirmed":false,"owner_is_vendor":false,"completed_account_application":false,"account_applications_disabled_and_does_not_use_ians":false,"account_application_cta_json":{"uses_ians":false,"aa_cta_image":"//d2510cgyzu7yiu.cloudfront.net/assets/handshake-icon-e68f660499699ba5f3ca2d74a340d7893143a3b9e77251b33cbbf98c1ef840da.png","aa_modal_application_image":"//d2510cgyzu7yiu.cloudfront.net/assets/application-97279b6cb9ea1f19e20304ddcb59e180f4ad6004248a47ac9caf34c945c1803b.png","aa_modal_success_image":"//d2510cgyzu7yiu.cloudfront.net/assets/check-e1b7bd2cd2f57032eeb99927f927087e46de9e91a74e54b7074c945e541c3cf7.png","aa_cta_link":"","find_account_number_link":null},"in_zone":null,"social_media":{"website":"http://www.gilfamily.es","linkedin_url":null},"marketing_hub_id":5325,"owner_edit_path":"https://www.sevenfifty.com/profile/edit","producers_index_path":"https://www.sevenfifty.com/producers_supplier_companies","supplier_hub":null,"default_image_urls":{"single_component_component_collection":"//d2510cgyzu7yiu.cloudfront.net/assets/marketing_hubs/banner_4-adfdef1555d4ec72b875bc3ac294e9b9f65a19cda35a0503c20c813897292347.jpg","product_list":["//d2510cgyzu7yiu.cloudfront.net/assets/marketing_hubs/product_list_product_0-52c29517beac094bd171990854d5a49991d7ecee4f3d3dcad8118fccb78e6d88.png","//d2510cgyzu7yiu.cloudfront.net/assets/marketing_hubs/product_list_product_1-9b7d5620230e6debea017c1899533fabde759a0af357c9b9dd657f4e139d27a7.png","//d2510cgyzu7yiu.cloudfront.net/assets/marketing_hubs/product_list_product_2-0e70992c8bb368a910a96e692a45551a398d3f0ac4d8f95f95013c52a47f30a0.png","//d2510cgyzu7yiu.cloudfront.net/assets/marketing_hubs/product_list_product_3-5ddf40688f0a05f64cbb13a4843a50a54e0499ca181b8374be9826113d946512.png"],"multi_component_component_collection":["//d2510cgyzu7yiu.cloudfront.net/assets/marketing_hubs/featured_lists_component_0-de43c0e61e8fba0dc97352a9fdfeb4c7dc49bd5d538207bb8cd208cf4f3d446b.png","//d2510cgyzu7yiu.cloudfront.net/assets/marketing_hubs/featured_lists_component_1-d38677792d627c281b68bcbc9e4b603104cc67ef77d345601dd0e9051f3eecbf.png","//d2510cgyzu7yiu.cloudfront.net/assets/marketing_hubs/featured_lists_component_2-e72d7faac569b5c8a1396b0adc5d98332e80e45202a919e2149ec397241cda34.png","//d2510cgyzu7yiu.cloudfront.net/assets/marketing_hubs/featured_lists_component_3-2b1f0d22042e812733b4302daf8deaeb690b8184045bfb58de78d92731aad9fa.png"]},"template_name_map":{"cta":"Call to action","text_and_left_image":"Text and left image","text_and_right_image":"Text and right image","header_and_text":"Header and text","product_list":"Product list","banner":"Banner","featured_lists":"Featured lists"},"display_add_to_cart_widget":null,"flash_hash":{"alert":null,"notice":null,"success":null},"global_marketing_hub_url":null,"current_market_name":null,"existing_markets_marketing_hubs":[{"marketing_hub_id":5325,"name":"Global Site","url":"https://buyer.sevenfifty.com/marketing_hubs/5325","zones":[]}],"available_marketing_hub_zones":null,"share_url_path":"/sc/gfe","can_manage_markets":false,"update_path":"/sc/gfe/about","home_page_name":"Home","new_page_name":"New Page","edit_help_button_url":"https://support.provi.com/s/","vendor_contacts":[],"buyer_vendor_edit_path":null}
